The Runner

a runners high they call it
a fleeting dream
my dream
once drenched my body
slick with sweat
true euphoria it raced, coursed though my blood
floating, just out reach
an,elusive pure reward for all who fly

I ran, long legs flying
my breath, rhythmic deep and steady
in out, heel toe
as I suck in air, life
damp fingers grasping
for that dream
finally captured in willing hands

now, older worn and wounded by life
body betrayed, in mind and spirit
I struggle to walk this world
my path, my reason gone
no longer to fly through time and space

I remember still the rush air upon my skin
remember that high
that dream
the sweet taste lingers
even as I walk stooped, my gate slower
slower
slower
my breath now but a grown.

It is now for others this dream
their time to fly
still to chase that luminous gift
while I walk the swift current of my end
this dream is for the young
it is theirs to savor now.

my world has become heavy
dull tinged with sadness
and worth not my consideration nor care
time has evolved
yet,far away I can still hear
a young girls laughter rushing by

Comes a time we all have to slow down.
Thanks for dropping by.

I am thinking your world is worth your consideration and care. It needs your art, your beautiful touch.

This is such an amazing poem encompassing all the stages of life. I enjoyed every verse. And I felt like we were running with you in this piece and slowing with time. Quite moving and beautiful.

This piece really makes one think ahead. I cherish all the gifts of movement and clarity in my life right now.

But there is beauty in learning to stop, to listen to the young girl running and sharing all that was learned on life's running. Yes!

How sad. I identify with the stanza about walking my path, no longer able to fly. But I'm more optimistic. The goals aren't gone. They are different. Beautiful poem.

Stan, thanks for reading in my poem. I agree that there comes a time when one must slow down.
If you have ever known the feeling of flying, every had both feet off the ground at the same time.Ever felt the wind whisper in your eyes If you have felt this then you would know the sadness of time.

Sandy, Thanks so much for your words of encouragement . I have been so ill this winter. I still dreams of running once again, Lord willing.

TWG,Thank you for your very kind words.I have missed running most of all. I use to run ten miles a day.
Now I walk with a cane. I still believe one day I'll run again.

QP, yes cherish what you can do and love in this life, Time slips away so quickly. I look in the mirror and see my father. I wonder when that happened?
So now be merry and do the things that make your life bright and happy.

Sue, you are truly a wise person. I wish I had your peace of mind and contentment. I still searching for my purpose in this world.
ST.Augustine said our hearts are restless tell we return to God.
That we all have some purpose, I guess when we complete what ever it is. We can go home.

Andree, thank you for your comments.I am happy that you liked my poem.
Yes, when one door closes another opens. Yet one can't seem to forget past loves and memories.

Absolutely beautiful and touching. Amazing post! Perhaps you can't run like the young girl, and maybe the luminous gift is not in front of you, but what you are sharing is a luminous gift to others.

Melanie, this fits all of us older ones who ran in a former more healthy life.
Running was my favorite thing to do, I felt like a deer on those highs. And in earlier life those we passed buy would admire (so we thought at least).
I remember when I was running up and down the bleacher steps a teenage girl hollered up, "my what gams!" Oh Wow!
Thank you for such a nice use of the prompt. I am slow making the rounds but I want to get everyone, not just the ones who comment on my blog.
I hope you read my daughter's poem featured for me on the OSI page.
