Headstones In The Light

midnight silence rings out
headlight flash on headstones
nothing seems to move in the inky darkness
still lights flash and sparkle
visions of angels and regret, move
the dead packed one on top of another
famous and forgotten when the lights flash
they begin their slow dance
all together in the dark sparkling monuments
of the once fair and comely
caught in tiny ovals of memory
faces move to the rhythm of the night

flashing headlights reveal
etched stones of those that once lived
now dance in darkness

Phew, gravestones and graveyards can get spookey after dark - I like the observation of the headlights and the way they can make the dead dance in your mind.

I think we lost your comment at The American Sandwich game.. sorry.

I am always drawn to images, well words that conjure up images within my mind's eye. As do your words here.

This is such a strong one for me. I am knowing this 'slow dance'

Sarah, thank you for reading my poem I was dreaming of Pere Lachaise Cemetery and St Michaels in Astoria. It's a wonderful place to walk and think but at night the headlights bring it alive.
